Let's Talk About Money

I believe legal services need to be accessible, not just theoretically available. And the biggest barrier? Cost.

You shouldn't have to choose between protecting your family and paying your bills. You shouldn't have to delay business formation because legal fees feel out of reach. You shouldn't have to risk your nonprofit's compliance because you can't afford counsel.

That's why everything about how I price my services is intentional:

  • I discuss pricing during discovery calls, so you know what this costs before you invest time in the process.
  • I use flat fees whenever possible, so you're not watching the clock every time you ask a question.
  • I offer sliding-scale equity pricing for every service, based on household income, business revenue, or nonprofit budget.

This isn't charity. This is sustainability. This is how legal services should work.

What this means for you:

Transparent pricing:

You know your investment before work begins.

Flexible payment:

Payment plans make legal work more manageable.

Equity-based approach:

Pricing reflects your financial capacity.

Honest conversations:

If cost is a concern, we'll talk about what's possible: phasing work, payment plans, or other alternative approaches.

How I Set Legal Fees

My flat-fee pricing structure is based on three factors:

1. The legal service you need: Estate planning, business formation, nonprofit work, etc.
2. The complexity of your situation: Simple structures cost less than complex ones
3. Your financial tier: Based on household income, business revenue, or nonprofit operating budget

This approach keeps pricing fair, predictable, and aligned with what you're actually able to invest.

Equity-Informed Pricing: What It Means

I offer sliding-scale fees based on:

  • Household income (for estate planning)
  • Business revenue (for business law)
  • Nonprofit annual budget (for nonprofit services)

Why do I offer this? Because cost shouldn't be the reason you don't protect your people or build your mission properly.

How It Works

During our discovery call, I'll ask about your financial situation to determine what rate tier you fall into. Together, we'll find a rate and a payment plan that respects both access and sustainability.

Consultation Options

Complimentary Discovery Calls (20-30 Minutes)

A welcoming conversation to understand your goals and recommend the right service.

  • What happens: We talk through your situation, I explain how I'd approach your needs, and we discuss pricing based on your tier.
  • What doesn't happen: This isn't a legal advice session; it's a conversation about fit and next steps.
  • Cost: Complimentary

Paid Legal Consultation (1 Hour)

Ideal if you're ready for tailored legal guidance, specific questions answered, or document review.

  • What happens: You get focused legal advice on your situation.
  • Cost: Tier-based pricing applies

Ongoing Support Options

Annual Care Plans

Optional plans designed to help you stay current and supported.
Available for:

  • Estate Planning (yearly reviews and updates)
  • Business Law (annual check-ins and compliance guidance)
  • Nonprofit Governance (governance reviews and compliance support)

What's included: Yearly reviews, check-ins, and email access for quick questions.

What isn't included: This isn’t a monthly retainer; it’s annual support for peace of mind.

Monthly Retainers

For businesses and nonprofits needing ongoing, consistent support.

What you get: Predictable monthly fees, priority access, and steady legal guidance as you grow.

How it works: Payment at the start of each month, scope defined based on your needs.

Payment Options

Most services include flexible payment plans:

  • Pay in full: Full payment at engagement
  • Two-payment plan: 50% at signing, 50% at 30 days
  • Three-payment plan: 1/3 at signing, 1/3 at 30 days, 1/3 at 60 days

You get to choose which works best for you. The only caveat? Final document delivery happens once I've received full payment.

Common Questions

How do I know if I qualify for equity-informed pricing?

Just ask. During our discovery call, I'll explain the ranges and we'll figure out what makes sense for your situation.

Do I need to provide financial documentation for tier-based pricing?

No. You simply share your income, revenue, or budget during your consultation, and I'll let you know which tier applies. This is based on trust and honesty.

What if I'm not sure I can afford this?

Tell me. We'll look at your options. Sometimes we can adjust scope. Sometimes we can phase the work. Sometimes equity-informed pricing makes it accessible.

What if I need more work after we finish?

We can discuss that. Some clients need updates years later. Some need ongoing support. We price additional work as it comes up.

Can I start with one service and add more later?

Absolutely. We can phase work based on your priorities and budget.

What if I can't afford the full scope right now?

Let's talk about it. We can explore payment plans, phasing work to address the most critical needs first, or other options.

What if I know I need help but can’t afford any of this?

If you genuinely can't afford legal services right now, I still want you to have resources. Here are a few free and low-cost legal services in Minnesota:

  • LawHelpMN.org: Free legal information and resources
  • Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid: Free legal services for low-income Minnesotans
  • Volunteer Lawyers Network: Pro bono legal assistance
  • LegalCORPS: Low-cost legal help for small businesses and nonprofits

I'd rather see you get help somewhere than go without legal protection entirely.
